Mid-urethral sling

A mid-urethral sling is a minimally-invasive and long-lasting treatment option for women to treat bladder leaks caused by stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

What is a mid-urethral sling?

A mid-urethral sling is a synthetic material that becomes integrated into the tissue around the urethra and forms a “hammock of support” under the urethra.

How a mid-urethral sling works

A mid-urethral sling system is designed to provide a hammock of support under the urethra to prevent it from dropping during physical activity, such as laughing or lifting.

A mid-urethral sling is designed to prevent urine from leaking out or reduce the amount of leakage.

Various types of slings have been developed that differ based on how they are placed under the urethra.  The most common types include single-incision, retropubic, or transobturator. Your doctor can review all available treatment options with you and, if using a mid-urethral sling to treat SUI, can recommend which anchoring location is right for you.

About the procedure

Mid-urethral sling procedures for female SUI are typically outpatient procedures, which means patients return home the same day. The procedure is minimally invasive and in most cases take less than 30 minutes.

Most patients resume moderate activities within two to four weeks, with no strenuous activity for up to six weeks. Talk with your doctor about post-procedure complications and when to notify them of a potential concern. Your doctor should answer all your questions and will discuss the type of anesthesia that may be needed, the specific procedure steps, and expectations for your recovery.
